St. Mary's Church
was
built in 1867 as a Chapel-of-Ease (a chapel within a parish to enable
local congregations to attend church services without having to travel
to the parish church).
The
money was raised by
subscription by the Rev. Solomon Cesar Malan and some of the work was
done by himself and other volunteers as well as as much of the material
being donated.
The
building of the chapel "to hold a congregation of 100" commenced in
1863
and was consecrated in 1867 by the Bishop of Salisbury. On the
day of consecration 27 candidates came
forward for baptism, only 18 actually received baptisms that day.
When
built
the chapel was in the parish of Broadwindsor. Drimpton became a
separate
parish in 1982 at which time St. Mary’s became the Parish Church.
Drimpton
is now part of the Beaminster
area team.
Services
are held every Sunday the 1st and
3rd Sunday - Eucharist at 9.30 am, the 2nd Sunday - Family service at
10.00 am and 4th Sunday - a United service with the Methodist church.
